Re-imagining Healthcare:
Housecalls are Back!
For centuries, doctors routinely visited patients in their homes, providing care in the comfort of
their own beds. Although their methods and tools, such as leeches and bloodletting, may seem
archaic to us today, this personalized approach to healthcare ensued that patients received
medical attention without needing to travel.
Up until the late 20th century, healthcare was not only more accessible, but also more affordable. Private health insurance didn’t emerge until the 1920’s, and many people paid for medical services through barter, offering chickens or garden produce instead of cash. Physicians benefited from this arrangement by enjoying good meals and avoiding the overall costs associated with maintaining a staff and office, while patients received necessary care at home.
In the 1930s and 40s, house calls constituted 40% of American doctor appointments. However, within forty years, this practice had dwindled to less than 1%. How did we let such a beneficial service slip away?
Dr. Jon Swanson’s close involvement with his mother’s care and his experience during his residency led him to conclude that corporate medicine had become impersonal. He observed that providers often have little time or interest in getting to know their patients and understanding their needs.
